Laser Filament Cutting

Filament cutting technology, with unmatched precision and finesse, is shaping the future of industrial manufacturing, crafting a brilliant chapter in the story of progress. This innovation has propelled laser cutting technology to new, unprecedented heights.

What is a filament? When an ultrashort laser pulse is tightly focused into a transparent medium like air or glass, nonlinear absorption effects create a self-focusing lens within the material. This process is akin to inserting a lens into the medium, further concentrating the laser pulse. The laser's central intensity in its Gaussian distribution travels more slowly than its edges, leading to additional focusing, a phenomenon known as the optical Kerr effect.

This self-focusing generates enough intensity to ionize the glass, causing the pulse to diffract. Yet, the laser intensity remains strong enough to trigger the Kerr effect again, leading to repeated self-focusing along the pulse's path. This chain of self-focusing events forms what is known as a filament, resembling pearls on a string. This is why the process is referred to as PearlCut.

The filament effect in glass cutting has completely transformed the limitations of traditional methods. It allows for rapid, highly precise cuts, boosting both production efficiency and product quality. Since laser cutting is non-contact and free from mechanical stress, it preserves the integrity of the glass surface, minimizing the risk of damage or scratching. As a result, filament-based cutting technology has seen widespread adoption in the glass processing industry, bringing renewed momentum to its growth and innovation.

HGLaser Light Blade series incorporates cutting-edge third-generation filament cutting technology. Utilizing HGLaser proprietary precision optical design, it harnesses the dynamic interplay between Kerr effect self-focusing and plasma defocusing to generate a stable filament on the workpiece. This filament, which extends for several millimeters, ensures highly efficient and precise cutting.
