SOFC: The Next-Generation High-Efficiency Green Energy Conversion Technology

Global demand for AI computing power is soaring. Large-scale model training and inference are driving energy consumption in data centers to unprecedented levels. The emerging “AI energy crisis” is becoming a core bottleneck that restricts the growth of the digital economy.

As traditional power grids struggle to expand while AI computing centers require “high-energy, continuous-operation” capabilities, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have emerged as an ideal solution. With fuel flexibility, high energy conversion efficiency, and ultra-low carbon emissions, SOFC is redefining the path toward sustainable energy supply.

The market potential is massive: according to CICC, the installed capacity of SOFC systems in North American data centers alone is expected to reach gigawatt scale between 2026 and 2030, generating a market worth billions and offering vast long-term opportunities.

Metal Support: The Structural Core of SOFC

Among various SOFC technology routes, metal-supported SOFC (MS-SOFC) is widely considered the most promising path to commercialization. Its superior thermal-shock resistance, mechanical strength, and rapid start-stop capability make it ideal for long-term deployment.

However, manufacturing the core component — the metal support substrate — remains a critical bottleneck for mass production.

As the foundation for gas transmission, electron conduction, and structural support, its porosity must be strictly controlled within 25%–35%, with micro-scale pore diameters. Excessive porosity weakens structural strength; insufficient porosity hinders gas diffusion; inconsistent pore sizes lead to uneven current density — all directly affecting cell performance and manufacturing cost.

Compared with traditional processing methods, laser machining offers non-contact, stress-free, high-precision advantages. It enables rapid batch drilling of dense micro-holes without damaging thin metal substrates, achieving micrometer-level accuracy in high-efficiency multi-hole processing.

Industry First — HGTECH Solves the Mass-Production Challenge

As a pioneer and leader in China’s industrial laser applications — with proven expertise in alkaline electrolyzer plates, bipolar plates, and other clean-energy manufacturing equipment — HGTECH has introduced high-speed laser micro-hole technology to the SOFC metal support sector for the first time.

Targeting industry-wide production bottlenecks, HGTECH has developed the “Starlight” series of advanced micro-hole processing technologies and launched the industry’s first intelligent laser drilling equipment for SOFC metal supports. This breakthrough delivers high through-hole rates, uniform pore diameters, and superior drilling quality — providing essential equipment support for large-scale SOFC commercialization.
