Causes and Solutions of Burr When Using Laser Cutting Machine

Laser cutting machines have been common in sheet metal processing. Because of their high processing efficiency and high cutting quality of finished products, many enterprises have begun to use laser cutting machines to replace manual processing. Laser cutting machines have become the standard configuration of sheet metal processing stations. When some customers use the laser cutter to process sheet metal, the effect of the cut work-piece is very unsatisfactory, and there are many burrs. Then many customers begin to doubt the quality of the laser cutting machine, which is not the case. During the cutting process of the metal laser cutting machine, burrs are produced in the processed materials due to improper operation or technical problems. Burr only occurs in metal cutting, and there is no burr problem in non-metal cutting.

 

In the process of sheet metal processing, the gas purity and parameter setting of the laser cutting machine will affect the processing quality. The equipment, gas and parameters are adjusted to the best state, and the cut work-piece is burr free. So how does burr come into being?

In fact, burrs are excessive residue particles on the surface of metal materials. When the laser cutter is working, sometimes a large number of residues will adhere to the metal surface, or when cutting thick plates, there will also be slag hanging. When the laser cutting machine processes the work-piece, it uses the energy generated by the laser beam irradiating the work-piece surface to vaporize and evaporate the work-piece surface to achieve the purpose of cutting. But here is a device that deserves our attention, that is, gas.

 

In the process of machining, the gas is used to blow off the slag on the work-piece surface after vaporizing on the work-piece irradiation surface. If gas is not used, burrs will be formed on the cutting surface after the slag is cooled. Therefore, the purity of the gas should be high, and we can change to a higher quality gas supplier. The purity of the gas is very important. Do not use cylinder gas, because after two filling, the purity is not good and the gas is wasted.

 

Another reason is the quality problem of the equipment itself, as well as the parameter setting factor. Therefore, when customers buy laser cutting machines, they should have experienced operators debug the equipment. Therefore, we should try to adjust the cutting parameters to the best. The air pressure, flow, focal length, and cutting speed must be adjusted many times. It is impossible to cut high-quality work-pieces by relying on the parameters provided by the machine.

 

If a material has burrs, it can be identified as a defective product. The more burrs, the lower the quality. Generally speaking, when the laser cutting machine has burrs, the following aspects can be checked and solved:

 

1. The output power of the laser cutter is insufficient. When cutting thick plates, a high-power laser cutting machine is required, so as to ensure the integrity of cutting and the products can be directly used.

 

Solution: check whether the laser cutting machine works normally. If it is abnormal, it needs to be repaired and maintained in time. If it is normal, check whether the output value is correct. At the same time, it is necessary to check whether there are problems with the lens during laser transmission, such as whether there are stains on the lens, whether the transparent lens is stained, and whether the transparent lens has small cracks that are difficult to be detected by the naked eye, which will affect the transmission of laser light.

 

2. The up and down positions of the focus of the beam deviate, and the focus is too close or too far will affect the work of the laser cutting machine.

 

Solution: adjust the position of the focus according to the offset position.

 

3. The purity of the gas of the cutting machine is not enough. In order to achieve high-quality cutting work, the best gas is 5-9 high-purity nitrogen or oxygen; Or the gas pressure is not enough. If the gas pressure is not enough, the slag cannot be blown away, thus forming burrs after cooling.

 

Solution: improve the gas purity or change the gas and adjust the gas pressure. For example, for laser cutting stainless steel, it is recommended to use nitrogen, because nitrogen is a flame-retardant gas. During laser processing, nitrogen can not only prevent the laser cutting from exploding, so that the heated end face will not be oxidized instantaneously, and the cut end face will be smoother and brighter. The auxiliary gas should be adjusted to a pressure of 12-15kg. The nitrogen under this pressure will not completely stop the combustion, but also quickly blow away the waste to remove burrs.

 

4. The speed of the laser cutting machine. When the laser cutter is working, whether the speed is too fast or too slow will affect the cutting effect. If the cutting speed is too fast and the work-piece cannot be cut in time, oblique stripes will be formed on the cutting surface, and slag will hang in the lower half area. If the speed of the cutting machine is too slow, over-burning will occur, the overall cutting surface will be roughened, the slit will become wider, and slag will hang on the upper part.

 

Solution: adjust the wire cutting speed in time.

 

5. The addition point of the laser beam of the cutting machine is offset.

 

Solution: adjust the focus in time

 

6. Instability caused by the operation time of the laser cutter is too long.

 

Solution: shut down the machine and restart it, and let the machine rest.

 

Laser cutting machine is a precise machine, and often a data error will cause its abnormal operation. Therefore, it is necessary to be strict in work to reduce errors.
